What Causes Acid Reflux: 6 Main Triggers

PLEASE SHARE:

Acid reflux can simply be described as a condition where stomach acids flow upwards into the esophagus as a result of the opening of a valve which separates the stomach and the esophagus. The condition normally causes a lot of discomfort and affects millions of people worldwide. While scientists have not fully established what causes this disturbing condition, there are certain foods known to trigger the condition. Additionally, a couple of physical factors have also been identified as key contributors of the disease. Fortunately, the disease can easily be prevented or cured if one is able to make appropriate lifestyle changes to avoid triggering the disturbing condition.

Generally, the main causes of acid reflux disease include:

What cause acid reflux: 6 main triggers

A weakened esophageal sphincter

A weakened esophageal sphincter in has been identified as one of the main causes of acid reflux disease. The weakened flap may allow food contents from the stomach to flow back on to the throat up the mouth. The acid flowing back passes through the esophagus causing serious discomfort in the chest as a result. When the flap or the esophageal sphincter is chronically weakened then the condition becomes known GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

What cause acid reflux : Diet

Certain types of foods have also been identified as the main triggers or causes of acid reflux disease. Some of the foods that cause stomach acids to flow back from the stomach into the esophagus include; caffeinated and carbonated drinks, black pepper, fried foods, tomatoes, fatty foods etc. People who suffer from acid reflux disease are advised to avoid such foods at all cost if they want the symptoms to subside or ease significantly.

After meal habits

There are several posture position that can trigger or increase acid reflux. Positions like lying flat on one’s stomach or bending forward greatly triggers the condition and cause lots of discomfort to the patient. Additionally, eating or taking one’s meals then going to bed immediately is another practice that causes the disturbing condition.

Overeating

Another probable cause of acid reflux among the population is overeating. Overeating causes the stomach to be full, and as such, there isn’t any space left in the stomach, resulting in acids flowing back into the esophagus sometimes into the mouth.

What cause acid reflux: Pregnancy

Pregnant women often suffer from acid reflux disease, largely due to the fact that their stomachs may not have enough room to process or digest food fast. This situation occurs as a result of the placenta or the baby resting lying on the digestive system (tract) thus causing the acids to flow back into the esophagus.

Smoking

Smoking has also been identified as one on the causes of acid reflux disease. Smoking Cigarettes leads to smoke getting into the stomach in form of acids and as a result increasing the amount of acids in the stomach significantly. When the level of acids in the stomach exceeds a certain level then the prospects of such acids flowing back into the esophagus are pretty high. Additionally, smoking has also be found to contribute to the weakening of the esophageal sphincter.
