Signs of Acid Reflux in Babies

Acid reflux in babies happens when the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) is not able to close in the right way. This makes it easy for the stomachs contents to reflux or go back up into the esophagus. The liquid mixture of pepsin and acid which goes to the esophagus can be irritating as well as cause inflammation and in rare cases damage it. Pepsin which is the enzyme that helps in digestion of proteins found in the stomach can also be accompanied by bile from the stomach. The most dangerous part of this mixture however is the fact that it can eat up the lining of the esophagus. Some of the signs of acid reflux in babies that you should be on the look out for include:

If the baby does not seem to hold any food or milk that they are given, they could be suffering from reflux. This is one of the main signs of the condition which can be quite dangerous as it means that the baby might not be getting the required nutrients for growth and development. Try and burp the child after feeding but if it progresses it is better to consult with a professional pediatrician who will give you the right direction to follow.

Another example of signs of acid reflux in babies is restlessness. This can be detected easily especially if you have a calm child who is always playing or sleeping. You will notice that the baby can no longer sit still even when in the loving arms of the parents. He/she will seem distracted by something and cannot even play with toys or other people who try to keep the baby entertained. This happens even when you take them for a stroll or walk as the acid is disturbing normal function of the body.

Excessive crying

This is also found on the list of signs of reflux in babies. Although it is normal for babies to cry when they are not feeling comfortable, they could also be crying because they are suffering from the condition. You might want to make sure that the child does not have a fever, is dry and is well fed so that you can rule out some of the most common signs of crying. You should however avoid self medication and seek expert help to be on the safe side. This is because you could give the baby the wrong type of medicine which can affect them in a negative way.

Excessive gas

When the baby has too much gas in the stomach it could be one of the signs of reflux in babies. This causes them to be very uncomfortable thus you should make sure that the baby is fed in the right way to avoid accumulation of excess gas in the stomach. Massaging the stomach in anticlockwise direction can also help relive the baby from the condition. This may cause sleepless nights thus it is also important to observe the sleeping pattern of the baby when looking out for the signs that could show that he/she is suffering from acid reflux.
