How Much Baking Soda Is Needed To Relieve Heartburn?


heartburnHeartburn is not only uncomfortable, it can be very frustrating as well, especially if you’re in a social situation.

It’s particularly disruptive if it is a regular occurrence; and although some people find that certain foods cause heartburn, avoiding these foods doesn’t always bring relief.

There are various options for relieving this uncomfortable ailment, and baking soda is one of the most popular and effective. It’s a natural and easy-to-come-by solution.

Relieving heartburn using baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is as easy as mixing it with water, and drinking the solution. The amount of baking soda will depend on how severe the heartburn is, but should be a teaspoon or less.

Use as little baking soda as possible, up to a teaspoon. With milder heartburn, half, or even a quarter, of a teaspoon may be sufficient, while a more severe bout of the condition may need a full teaspoon.  Mix the baking soda in about one cup of either cold or room-temperature water, and stir until it is fully dissolved.

baking sodaDrink it slowly and calmly. Gulping it, or drinking too fast could upset your stomach, so resist the temptation to “down it” and take small, slow sips.

Baking soda does not act as quickly as antacid tablets, but the effect lasts much longer.

Whereas an antacid tablet may work quickly, the effects can fade fairly quickly too, with baking soda, it may take slightly longer to act, but the relief lasts much longer.  The way in which baking soda works on heartburn is by helping to increase the pH balance in your stomach. When you eat, your stomach produces an acid called hydrochloric acid.

This acid digests the food you eat, and is extremely strong. Its corrosive quality is what causes the burn you feel in your chest. Baking soda has a high pH, and when you mix it with water and drink it, it will balance the acidic liquid in your stomach, making it less acidic, and therefore easing the burning feeling.

heart brunIt is important you take only very little – baking soda is very concentrated, and a very small amount will have a large effect.

Taking too much can cause an imbalance in the other direction and can induce vomiting and nausea.

It’s advisable to take very little to begin with. If this is your first time, taking baking soda for heartburn, try just a quarter of a teaspoon mixed in cup of water.

Drink that slowly, and allow about 20 minutes to wait for the effect. If you find that has not relieved your heartburn, try another quarter. This will total half a teaspoon. Wait again, and if the heartburn has subsided, then of course, you don’t need to take any more, and you’ll know for next time, that if the heartburn is about the same intensity, a half a teaspoon of baking soda should relieve it.

If it has still not subsided, try another quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda, again dissolved in a cup of water, and remember to drink it slowly. Don’t go beyond one full teaspoon, in other words, four sets of quarter teaspoon doses. Less than a full teaspoon usually works for most people, but some may need a full teaspoon for very intense bouts.

Baking SodaThe important things to remember are to always dissolve it in no less than a cup of water – a solution that is too strong can cause stomach upsets and vomiting and take as little as possible each time.

Take the minimum amount needed in order to relieve the heartburn. A lot of baking soda taken over a long period of time can affect your blood acidity level and is known as sodium bicarbonate abuse.

There is a difference between baking soda and baking powder. It is baking soda that works, since it is the “soda” part that relieves heartburn by affecting the pH balance in your stomach, not the “baking” bit.

Although baking powder contains baking soda, it also contains a lot of other ingredients that are not necessary for the relief of heartburn. If it is taken regularly, baking powder can have a detrimental effect on your health. Taking a teaspoon or less of baking soda, mixed in one cup of water, and drinking it slowly is an effective, inexpensive and natural way to relieve heartburn.
