It is believed that this effect occurs because chewing gum increases saliva production, which then dilutes and neutralizes the acid.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another simple home treatment which is safe and effective in most cases. It works because sodium bicarbonate is very alkaline, and therefore it has a similar effect to an over the counter antacid medication. To take the baking soda, dissolve half a teaspoon in a glass of warm water – be careful not to use more than this as some people find that it triggers nausea.

If you dislike the taste, try flavoring the water with a dash of freshly squeezed lemon. Although lemon juice is very acidic it actually converts to an alkaline in the body, and will therefore cause no detrimental effects in regards to the reflux.

But what few people realize is that it is also edible, and can have internal benefits as well. Aloe vera juice is anti-inflammatory and can reduce the irritation caused by acid in the stomach and the esophagus.

Just half a glass should be enough to see the benefit, while avoiding the slightly laxative effects. Although most people suffer from acid reflux occasionally, it is worth visiting your doctor if you notice it several times per week. This will rule out serious underlying causes.
