Though no serious type of complications are experienced due to acid reflux symptoms but if it prolongs for longer period then it can damage esophagus causing scarring as well as narrowing of it. The narrowing of esophagus may cause strictures in it resulting in the difficulty in swallowing. You may have the sensation of sticking of the food into your esophagus due to the development of certain abnormally shaped and colored cells in the lining of the esophagus because of continuous irritation caused by stomach acid. This can be a cancerous condition in some acute cases.

If you are getting heartburn problem more than twice a week for more than 15 days even then you should discuss it with your doctor. Discomfort or pain in shoulder, jaw or neck, sweating with chest pain, nausea, dizziness, lightheartedness or short breathing with or without chest pain are some of the other symptoms that are equally experienced in GERD problem as well as heart attack. So you can call 911 immediately if you experience any of them.

Home remedies for GERD symptoms

Though GERD symptoms can be treated by changing your eating habits and lifestyle as well as through various medicinal treatments but some of the usually used home remedies of acid reflux are as under:

Avoid lying down right after eating food at any time of day

The head of your bed should be elevated by 6 inches with blocks. Reflux can be prevented with gravity

Avoid eating within 3 hours of bedtime as you can control the production of acid in your stomach as it becomes empty within this period

Avoid overeating or eating heavy meals. The amount of acid needed to digest it increases if you eat lots of food at a time. Eat frequent but smaller meals several times a day.

You should stop smoking as it increases reflux by weakening the lower esophageal sphincter.
