Baby acid reflux – What it is and how to avoid it

PLEASE SHARE:

Baby acid reflux is actually very common and there is no doubt that at some point your child will suffer from it and of course this will mean they will feel the same kind of discomfort as you do without them knowing what it actually is. What follows is information on what it actually involves and also how to cut down the chances of your baby having it at some point.

Basically, this problem occurs mainly after feeding when the contents of the stomach start to move back up the esophagus just in the same way as it does with adults. Your baby may get it at any point due to it coughing, crying, or anything else that results in some extra strain being put on their body when food is in their stomach. This particular problem will then tend to resolve itself at some point between the age of 12 to 18 months and this is purely due to their body growing and being more accustomed to keeping the food in the stomach rather than it escaping.

In regard to the symptoms there are a few key ones to look out for just after feeding your baby that may indicate that they are indeed having a problem. The main ones include them spitting up fluid, they start coughing or wheezing, they seem extremely irritated just after you have finished feeding them, they cry when you lie them down after it, and you may also want to look out for them refusing to eat anything else when they have not finished. Any one of these symptoms may be a sign of them having baby acid reflux and you then need to think of finding an appropriate cure to give them some relief from the problem.

It is important to point out that you will not be required to call a doctor in the vast majority of cases and indeed it is only when certain symptoms appear that you need to get them some professional medical care. A few of these symptoms include them not putting on any weight and coughing or spitting up some colored fluid especially if it is yellow or green, but even this problem will not be serious even if it is scary.

When it comes to trying to prevent it from happening in the first place, then do look at feeding them slower and do try to breastfeed rather than a bottle. If you do use a bottle, then try to use a medium sized nipple as it will give them enough milk at a time without overloading them as this can lead to the reflux. You are also advised to burp them after every feeding as this reduces the amount of air that gets into the stomach and can prevent the reflux from building up. Finally, make sure your baby is sitting upright for at least 15 minutes after feeding because lying them down encourages the food to come back up the esophagus causing the reflux.

That is a quick summary of baby acid reflux and you should now be in a better position to prevent it from happening and also identifying the problem in the first place. Do remember that it still means your baby is entirely healthy so try not to worry and just take your time feeding them and curing them when it does actually happen.
