Acid reflux treatment

At some point, we all have experienced some form of heart burn. We feel a burning sensation in the chest that is usually accompanied by an unpleasant acidic taste. Acid reflux or Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) commonly known as heartburn is a disease disorder where the acid of the stomach moves up towards the esophagus. This leads to several symptoms like a heartburn, loss of appetite, bloating in the stomach, a sour taste in the mouth, belching, nausea may also occur leading to vomiting . The affected person may also experience difficulty in swallowing and breathing.

How does acid reflux occur?

When we eat our meals, food passes from the mouth, along the oesophagus and eventually into the stomach, where the door is tightly shut. Food particles are reduced; this allows easy absorption of nutrients through the intestines into the body, whilst waste products are eliminated. At the base the esophagus there is a circular ring called oesophagel sphincter (LES).

LES acts as the doorway between the stomach and the oesophagus. As food passes through the oesophagus to the stomach, the door is shut tight. However if LES is not functioning properly food can escape back towards the esophagus. This results to stomach acids escaping back into the oesophagus; these acids attack the esophageal lining. This isn’t good for the osephageal lining since it’s not designed to cope with the stomach acid. This results into an uncomfortable burning sensation. Therefore treating the delicate oesophageal lining is required.
The biggest cause of acid reflux disease is overeating and eating foods that have fat and salt content.
