Smokers produce only half the saliva produced by those who do not smoke. Saliva has considerable amount of bicarbonate that helps in neutralizing stomach acids. Smoking may also relax LES muscles, increasing the chances of acid reflux disease.

Excess body weight can also trigger acid reflux. Excess fat around the stomach area can put more pressure on stomach, which may push acidic stomach juices into the esophagus, and may eventually lead to GERD. Sometimes pregnancy may also cause acid reflux.

  • A well known acid reflux trigger is big meals. Large meals can exert pressure on stomach which forces its contents upwards into esophagus. You should not lie down immediately after taking heavy meals. You need two hours to digest your meals. It’s much better to take 4-6 smaller meals instead of 3 big ones. Another natural way to control acid reflux disease is to do regular exercises. Aside from that, stay hydrated by drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water. Water helps in diluting acid and moves it down.

  • Aloe vera is one of the best and cost effective acid reflux remedies. You can easily get it in liquid form from the market. You can also make its juice in the blender by removing its skin and adding a glass of water to it.
